  • Fluid loss from muds and cement slurries to a permeable formation can significantly impact performance or damage the formation. If the cement slurry loses too much fluid, its strength can be compromised and require costly remedial intervention. The Model 4300 Fluid Loss Cell from Chandler Engineering, a leader in drilling and completion instrumentation, measures the fluid loss properties of muds and cement slurries in accordance with API procedures.

    Chandler developed the Model 4300 Fluid Loss Cell to eliminate safety issues that have been associated with traditional fluid loss instrument designs. The cell is designed using threaded end caps that eliminate the dangers associated with set screw style cells and pop off valves within the hardware design to prevent over pressure scenarios.

    The system also incorporates never before used over-temperature circuitry as well as a micro-processor-based temperature controller that eliminates obsolete rheostat temperature adjustments. Redundant over-temperature safety circuitry eliminates the possibility of dangerous overheating, and a digital display allows the operator to accurately display and set the operating temperature with +/- 1oC (+/-2oF).

  • The search for deeper reservoirs in harsher environments is testing the limits of drilling and completion fluids. Testing requirements have now exceeded the limits of most traditional instruments. Viscosity measurements are no exception. The Chandler Engineering design team lead the industry with the introduction of the Model 7600 Ultra High Pressure High Temperature Viscometer in 2005 to exceed the anticipated requirements of the industry for the next 10 years.

    The same design expertise has taken that Robust design and developed a more compact version of the viscometer. The Model 7550 HPHT Viscometer has many of the same features as the Model 7600. However, in order to satisfy the greater need of the industry, the instrument design was made to be extremely user friendly with only slightly lowered limits. Additionally the Model 7550 was designed to comply with US and European safety standards, an industry first.

    The Model 7550 boasts shear rate accuracy and a magnetically coupled optically encoded torque measurement which enables sensitive, precise viscosity measurement in spite of the harsh temperatures and pressures. The small size and light-weight design of the system is as remarkable as its superb performance. Through new technology, the combined weight of the instruments vessel plug and sample cup has been kept to a mere 12 pounds for easier, safer handling and cleaning.

    The Model 7550 is a fully automated viscometer. The associated software is a powerful data acquisition and analysis tool designed to be operator friendly. Through the software, which can run on almost any computer, virtually any test cycle can be programmed and run. It can be set-up to automatically capture peak gel strength as well as 10 second and 10 minute gel values.

    Designed to provide users with as much flexibility as possible, the control software even allows a test cycle to be edited during testing. Test cycles can be easily paused and resumed or profile steps skipped. The software even has the capability to run automatic calibration cycles using your calibration fluids.

    Once testing is completed, the results can be displayed in user-configurable graphs. Sharing test results with other programs and colleagues is very easy as all test data is stored in a universal spreadsheet file format.

  • A Critical Tool for Oil Field Fluids
    The Model 5550 HPHT Viscometer is a concentric cylinder viscometer that uses the rotor and bob geometry accepted by the energy industry. Its design meets the requirements set forth in ISO and API standards for viscosity measurement of completion fluids at high pressure and high temperature.

    Engineering Excellence for Superior Performance
    The small, bench-top Model 5550 is engineered with a number of features that make it both highly accurate and very reliable. The instrument’s temperature control system uses a sliding carbon-block heater which provides precise control while eliminating the oils and circulators associated with liquid high-temperature baths. The rotor drive employs an accurate, high precision speed control system for precise shear rate control. Torque measurements are performed by a highly accurate digital sensor which is external to the sample cell to avoid corrosion or abrasion. The proprietary design of the bob’s shaft serves as a very effective climb arrestor which keeps the sample in the measurement region of the cell and away from critical rod seals and bearings. This
    combination of benefits provides better test results while prolonging the life of key components. Should the bob’s shaft bearings need replacing, a user will be pleased to discover that he can replace them in less than ten minutes compliments of the best-engineered design on the market.

    Operational Simplicity
    The Model 5550 Viscometer is simple to operate. All of the basic operational controls are conveniently located on the front panel. Test schedule programming, control and data acquisition are provided by the Chandler Rheo 5000 software, which operates on an independent computer. The control system provides automatic temperature and pressure profile control, motor speed profiles, and automatic calibration capabilities. The software also features real time displays of test parameters and results. All data is easily exported to a spreadsheet file for archiving and data sharing.

  • A Critical Tool for Reservoir Analysis
    The Model 6100 Formation Response Tester (FRT) is designed to accurately measure the permeability changes of a formation sample when exposed to a variety of test fluids. This highly flexible, easy to use system is capable of simulating nearly any well completion and stimulation schedule on a core sample. The unit is also capable of operating as a dynamic fluid loss tester with the optional Slurry Cart.

    Designed for Flexibility and Reliability
    The unique design of the Model 6100 allows fluids to be injected through a prepared core sample to simulate the flow of treating fluids or formation fluids. Core flow can be directed through three paths: forward, reverse and across the face. Up to five separate fluids can be controlled in any sequence through any flow path. The system is designed to handle acids and other corrosive fluids at temperatures up to 350ºF / 177ºC. An example of this flexibility is shown in the following test schedule. Reliability is designed into the Model 6100 to ensure many years of service. A custom stainless steel valve manifold contains all necessary flow paths. This significantly reduces the number of fittings, the maze of tubing, the fluid dead volume, and most importantly the number of potential leaks. Durable, air-operated valves with HASTELLOY® C-276 wetted parts can be quickly and easily replaced if needed.

    Operational Simplicity
    The Model 6100 is designed to be very user friendly both mechanically and in its software interface. The core holder pivots to ease insertion of a core sample or inspection of the holder. Once the core is loaded into the core holder, a confining pressure is applied to the Hassler Sleeve to seal the core. The technician then
    programs or selects a flow schedule and a desired temperature before clicking on the “run” button to begin the test. Multiple pressure ports along the core allow monitoring the change in permeability as fluids invade deeper into the core as well as the determination of skin factors which may influence the testing results.

    The software for the Model 6100 also performs the data acquisition. All channels are recorded with time and can either be outputted directly or exported in spreadsheet format. The recorded data includes the measured and calculated values selected by the user. Upon test completion, an automated cleaning cycle can be run to prepare the system for the next test.
