Waves are an important factor for the operability of offshore drilling and associated operations (e.g. BOP landing, ROV L&R, temporarily hanging off casing/drill string, etc.). Operating limits for critical steps in these operations are often expressed in statistical properties. A crucial underlying assumption is that we cannot anticipate the occurrence of the next extreme wave and resulting heave motion. Next Ocean’s HeavePredictor decision support system, which uses X-band radar to monitor the waves surrounding the drilling rig or ship, changes this entirely. It provides real time information about extreme waves and heave motions in the upcoming minutes, enabling crew to anticipate on extreme occurrences or temporarily postpone critical steps in the operation if needed. The HeavePredictor systems currently operational offshore show the possibility to increase the operational limits up to 120% without increasing the operational risk and thereby significantly reduce WoW downtime.
