 Press Releases

  • DataPhysics Instruments has launched a world’s first: the PCA 200 Portable Contact Angle Goniometer - a handheld, fully self-contained device for determining contact angle, surface cleanliness and surface energy directly in manufacturing, on the production floor, or out in the field. Developed as an alternative to using traditional dyne pens for calculating surface energy in quality control and production, the PCA 200 enables the non-destructive testing of surfaces of any size, all in a device no larger than a typical digital camera.

Using the new PCA 200 Portable Contact Angle Goniometer, the surface energy of a solid surface can be very precisely determined using contact angle measurements with two test liquids, water and diiodomethane. Other test liquids can also be used.   This measurement offers significant advantages over dyne pens: the procedure is objective, quantitative, reproducible and provides additional information, as the surface energy is divided into polar and dispersive components. This allows conclusions about whether the surface can be better wetted with aqueous or oil-based coatings and inks, or how well a material can adhere to the surface.

  • DataPhysics OCA 25-PMC 550 / 750 for contact angle and interfacial tension measurement under high pressure and low to high temperature conditions

The OCA 25-PMC 550 / 750 contact angle goniometer with high pressure chamber is the ideal solution to investigate the interfacial tension under reservoir conditions between surfactant solutions and crude oil using the pendant drop method or the contact angle between rock, oil and surfactant solution via the sessile drop method.  Using either the stainless steel or optional hastelloy high pressure measuring chamber, you can measure interfacial tensions and contact angles at high pressures and under low to high temperature conditions. The OCA 25-PMC models feature a high pressure chamber with optical sapphire glass, a high pressure unit for generation and control of bulk liquid/gas pressure and drop liquid/gas pressure (manual or automatic), a temperature controller for control of chamber temperature (for electric heating), plus dosing needles with different diameters and a magnetic positioning system for solids, removable magnetic positioning system for solid samples,  a set of needles with different diameters for various interfacial tension ranges, high performance 6X zoom lens, integrated continuous fine focus, and adjustable observation angle, a video measuring system with high-performance camera using USB 3.0 interface, LED-lighting with manual and software controlled intensity including automatic temperature drift compensation.  The Hastelloy C-276 Pressure Chamber features extraordinary corrosion-resistance and can operate at pressures of up to 550 bar and temperatures ranging from -30 °C to 200 °C or higher.  The Stainless Steel pressure chamber of is made of stainless steel 1.4980 and can withstand even higher pressures to 750 bar and temperatures ranging from -30 °C to 300 °C.

  • The DataPhysics SVT-25 Spinning Drop Tensiometer is designed to measure extremely low interfacial tensions and rheological properties to analyze surfactant effectiveness in the development of emulsions or in enhanced oil recovery.

The SVT 25 is a compact optical measuring instrument for the determination of low to ultra-low interfacial tensions and rheological interface properties. Highest precision and reproducibility of the measuring results is guaranteed by a well-established measuring technique and first grade mechanical and optical components. Due to state of the art electronic components the SVT 25 can be operated intuitively via the TP 50 control panel.

For an efficient measuring procedure the measuring cell, with the rotating capillary, is mounted on a tilting table, which allows the operator to easily move the drop of interest into the camera view. The fast 6.5-fold zoom lens with fine focus enables an analysis of small and large drops alike.

Due to the high-performance camera with USB 3 interface the spinning drop can be analyzed with exceptional resolution. Fast processes e.g. during oscillation experiments can be captured with up to 3250 frames/s. Once detected the drop is automatically tracked by the movable camera.

A highly dynamic measurement drive creates a uniform rotation even at highest rotational velocities of up to 20 000 rev/min. In addition it allows for sinusoidal changes in revolution speed for oscillation measurements and for rapid rotational velocity steps with a max. acceleration of up to 500 rev/s2.

Samples can be easily placed inside the SVT 25, within seconds, due to fast-exchange glass capillaries with perfect fitting accuracy. Hence the highest throughput rates can be assured. In order to avoid extensive cleaning procedures disposable glass tubes with corresponding holders can also be used for the measurement. The observation windows of the measuring cells for the SVT 25 can be easily removed by opening just two knurled screws and are easy to clean in case they came into contact with sample material.

Temperatures within the range of -30 °C to 180 °C can be reached inside the cell. This facilitates the creation of many different environmental conditions. Due to a specially designed capillary and a resulting higher pressure tolerance the SVT 25 can even be used with water-based solutions at up to 130 °C.
